Douglas has a 40 year business career yielding experience in almost every aspect, and at every level, of the healthcare technology product design and product commercialization processes. In 1990, his then five- year-old son, Leif, went blind in one eye when a retinal detachment was detected too late. Routine exams were uncomfortable, especially for a child, which made it impossible for the doctor to conduct a complete exam and view the entire retina. Douglas was concerned by the limited capability of diagnostic tools available to clinicians. Over the coming years he built a dedicated research team to look into the problem which in turn led to the formation of Optos plc. Optos developed the world’s first ophthalmic device capable of producing a single, high-resolution, ultra-widefield image of the retina. The new method of examining the retina, optomap®, is now offered by over 7000 eyecare professionals who have conducted over 46 million optomap retinal exams, worldwide.
Optos is dedicated to providing the only clinically validated retinal imaging technologies which enable eyecare professionals to see more, diagnose more, and treat more diseases earlier thus saving sight and saving lives. Our vision is to become the Retina Company.
